Lorde- Royals (US Version)

This 16-year-old who was born in New Zealand tops the Hot 100 this week making her the youngest artist to do this in 26 years! She just recently released her debut album “Pure Heroine” in September. Lorde signed with Universal studios at the age of 13. “Royals” quickly sold more than 85,000 copies in the U.S. I was quickly drawn to this song and was shocked by the lyrics. It sounds like it was written by someone much older. She is surely ahead of her time and you can tell she has a head on her shoulders. In an interview with Elle magazine she says:

“People forget what it’s like to be a teenager.” “Nothing really happens: You can’t go to bars, you can’t drive. You just want to get out and do something with your life.”

This song clearly states the mind state of mainstream America and how the pop culture influences people. People are chasing a false dream that in most cases will never happen. Here are the lyrics.

But every song’s like:
Gold teeth
Grey Goose
Tripping in the bathroom
Ball gowns
Trashing the hotel room
We don’t care, we’re driving Cadillac’s in our dreams

But everybody’s like:
Diamonds on your timepiece
Jet planes
Tigers on a gold leash

We don’t care, we aren’t caught up in your love affair

And we’ll never be royals (royals)
It don’t run in our blood
That kind of lux just ain’t for us, we crave a different kind of buzz
Let me be your ruler (ruler)
You can call me queen bee
And baby I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule, I’ll rule
Let me live that fantasy

It’s a great song over a dope beat that makes you dance and sing-a-long but I’m sure people aren’t even getting the message. hmm….. But live and let live. I’ll be swaying every time I listen to it. *snaps* =.)
